About

Our Firm

FHCE was founded in 1965 by Freeland Harris. Mr. Harris established a relationship with Gray Construction in Bowling Green, KY and began to provide structural design services on Gray’s projects. FHCE quickly became Gray’s primary source for structural engineering, and helped Gray become one of the nation’s leading design build contractors for industrial buildings.

Today FHCE continues the tradition of providing excellent structural design services that Mr. Harris established. We emphasize creative framing and foundation design solutions that add value to our customer’s projects while meeting current building codes to ensure the safety of the building’s users. We believe close coordination with all design and construction team members is critical to successful projects. Our services include 3D Revit modeling to assist in design coordination. Many of our projects are delivered on fast track design and construction schedules. Our experience and level of commitment allows us to thrive in this design environment.

Our services extend beyond when construction documents are issued. FHCE remains engaged in our projects until the building is turned over to the owner. We take a hands on approach to construction assistance ensuring our design is properly executed in the field. FHCE construction assistance consists of close review of fabrication drawings, presence at critical meetings with onsite contractors, and site visits to observe construction.

FHCE values the relationships we build through providing professional consulting services. If you are in need of structural consulting services please contact us. We look forward to learning about you and your project needs. Note that through our experience we have gained a vast network of design professionals in all disciplines. If your project is in need of a complete design package we can help build a team to meet your needs.

Freeland Harris

Freeland Harris’s career spanned more than five decades and left a lasting imprint on industrial construction across the southeastern United States. He earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Kentucky in 1958 and 1960, respectively. Early in his career, he worked as an engineer-in-training with a Lexington-based consulting firm before serving with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where he contributed to major infrastructure work including dam and bridge construction. These formative experiences grounded him in both design and field execution, shaping his practical, solutions-oriented engineering approach.

In 1965, Harris founded Freeland Harris Consulting Engineers (FHCE) in Madisonville, Kentucky. The firm initially focused on educational and institutional structures, but it quickly evolved alongside the growth of design-build construction in the United States. To better serve key industrial clients—most notably Gray Construction—the firm relocated first to Bowling Green in 1980 and later to Lexington in 1989. Under Freeland’s leadership, FHCE became known for its expertise in structural systems for large-scale industrial facilities, expanding its reach with an additional offices in Atlanta, Georgia.

During his career Freeland led the structural design efforts for Austal USA, RR Donelly, Tokico, CMC, Hitachi, Kobelco, CYC, Teledyne, Johnson and Hardin, Amgen, Hughes Aircraft, Bekaert, Monsanto, North American Stainless, TMI, Yamakawa, Spiegel/Eddie Bauer, Fruit of the Loom, Scott Paper, Nelson Metals, United States Postal Service, WT Young Storage, RJ Tower, The GAP, Ikea, Johnson Controls, Bear Creek, Dollar General, Mitsubishi Chemical, Michelin, Siemens Energy and many more.

Freeland remained actively involved in the firm even after selling the firm in 1996 to
Jim Johnson and his son Ted Harris. He
continuing to practice and mentor engineers until late in his life. Known for his technical rigor, responsiveness to contractors, and ability to deliver efficient structural solutions, he helped define FHCE’s reputation in the
industrial sector. Freeland Harris passed away on November 13, 2016, at the age
of 85, leaving behind a legacy carried forward through the firm he built and the
many engineers he influenced.

Ted Harris

Ted Harris was an accomplished structural engineer and business leader who played a pivotal role in expanding the reach and impact of Freeland Harris Consulting Engineers across the southeastern United States. He earned both his Bachelor of Civil Engineering (1988) and Master of Science in Civil Engineering (1995) from the Georgia Institute of Technology, establishing a strong technical foundation in structural engineering. Early in his career, Ted developed expertise in the design of industrial facilities, including complex structural systems and equipment foundations, working on projects throughout the United States.

In 1993, Ted founded FHCE’s Atlanta office, marking a significant expansion of the firm beyond its Kentucky roots. In 1996, Ted later became President and CEO of FHCE Georgia, where he helped strengthen the firm’s longstanding collaboration with Gray Construction and contributed to the delivery of major industrial and manufacturing facilities nationwide. Known for technical rigor and a practical approach, Ted specialized in fast-track project delivery, providing structural solutions that balanced efficiency, constructability, and performance in demanding industrial environments.

What set Ted apart from of structural engineers was his ability to “solve complex structural puzzles”.  Most often the puzzles presented them selves as complex equipment foundations.  In fact, he designed and detailed the 90-foot-deep foundation for the 60,000ton forging press for Weber Metals in Los Angeles, California, at the time the largest forging press in the western hemisphere.

During his career Ted led the structural design efforts for many companies including; Academy Sports, Air Bus, Allvac, ATI, Caterpillar, Dollar General, Danafilms, Fritz Winter, General Electric, Gulfstream, Hitachi, Hwashin, Johnson Controls, Michelin, Nasco, Newman Technology, Nippon Oil, Otsuka, Pratt and Whitney, Quikrete, Sherwin Williams, Sofidel, Thai Summit, Topre, Toray, Tower Automotive, Toyo, Toyotetsu, United Stated Post Service, Volkswagen, Weber Metals, Whirlpool, and many others.

Beyond professional accomplishments, Ted was widely respected for leadership, generosity, and commitment to others. Ted was known as a team-oriented mentor who fostered strong relationships with colleagues, clients, and partners, and remained deeply devoted to family and community. Ted passed away in a car accident on May 17, 2018, at the age of 53, leaving a lasting legacy through contributions to the engineering profession and the continued influence of the firm he helped lead.

Jim Johnson has played a central role in the continued growth and technical excellence of Freeland Harris Consulting Engineers. Jim earned both his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (1987) and Master of Science in Civil Engineering (1988) from Tennessee Technological University. He began his career at Palmer Engineering before joining FHCE in 1990, where he developed deep expertise in the design of industrial structures, crane buildings, tilt-up wall distribution centers, and complex foundation solutions.

In 1996, Jim became President of firm’s Lexington office, stepping into a leadership role during a pivotal transition period for the firm. Since that time, Jim has led structural design efforts for a wide range of fast-track, design-build industrial projects across the United States. He is particularly known for his ability to develop practical, constructable solutions that meet aggressive schedules while aligning the needs of both owners and construction teams.

Outside of his professional work, Jim is deeply engaged in outdoor activities and community initiatives. He enjoys mountain biking and riding motorcycles throughout Eastern Tennessee, North Georgia, and Western North Carolina, and has led efforts to develop mountain bike trail systems in Central Kentucky and Chattanooga.
